World Coconut Day 2024 is being celebrated today with great enthusiasm among the farmers and stakeholders of coconut-producing countries such as India, Indonesia, Thailand, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Every year, the celebration is supported by schools, as well as agricultural and culinary institutes. These initiatives aim to promote the fruit’s consumption and highlight its eco-friendly attributes.

On the occasion of World Coconut Day 2024, the Parachute Kalpavriksha Foundation held training sessions for farmers in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, focusing on techniques such as pest and disease management, nutrient management, climate-resilient irrigation practices, organic farming, and field cultivation methods.

Why is World Coconut Day Celebrated?

World Coconut Day was initiated by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC). In 2009, the APCC marked its 40th anniversary and chose this date to be celebrated annually on September 2 as an international event. The celebrations have continued since then, aiming to promote coconut consumption and raise awareness about its benefits.

As described by our ancestors, the coconut tree is a “tree of life.” It provides a range of products for food, drink, medicine, and construction.

Coconut Water: From quenching thirst to aiding in illness recovery, coconut water offers nourishing properties.
Coconut Pulp: Whether raw or dried, this pulp is valuable for adding flavor and texture to numerous dishes. It also has medicinal uses due to its mineral-rich attributes.
Coconut Oil: Oil extracted from the fruit is a natural antioxidant and antibacterial formula. From cooking to cosmetics and hair products, coconut oil is beneficial in many ways for overall well-being.
Coconut Shell: Dried coconut shells are used to create decorative items and utensils, promoting eco-friendliness and sustainability.
Coconut Fibers: These fibers are utilized in making ropes, mats, and baskets, demonstrating their everyday practicality.
Coconut Leaves: The leaves can be woven into roofs, mats, hats, fences, and more, showcasing their versatility.

Additionally, coconuts offer sustainable solutions, replacing plastics and other harmful materials throughout their lifecycle. Their nourishing and medicinal qualities also contribute to their spiritual significance in some cultures, such as Indian spirituality, where coconuts play an integral role.

About the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC)

The Asian Coconut Community was established on September 9, 1969, with its headquarters in Jakarta. Its motto was “to promote, coordinate, and harmonize all activities of the coconut industry.” As countries outside Asia joined, the name was amended to the “Asian and Pacific Coconut Community.” APCC members collectively account for over 90 percent of the world’s coconut production and exports.
