Prime Minister Internship Scheme 2024: Over 1.5 Lakh Applications Received Within 24 Hours

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs of India has launched a new internship program for the youth of India, called the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS). The scheme went live at 5 p.m. on the 13th of October. Within 24 hours, the portal received an overwhelming number of applications, with more than 1.55 lakh candidates registering. As per sources from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, 1,55,109 candidates have applied for the internship so far.

What is PMIS?

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme in Top Companies is a pilot project introduced in the Budget 2024-2025. This scheme aims to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth in the top 500 companies over five years. Through this scheme, participants from all states and union territories of India will gain 12 months of exposure to real-life business environments across various professions and employment opportunities.

The top companies for this project have been identified based on the average CSR expenditure over the last three years. These companies include giants from various sectors such as Reliance Industries Ltd., TATA, HDFC Bank, Infosys, Wipro, etc. The internship is set to commence on December 2nd, 2024.

Salient Features of the Internship

The internship allows 1.25 lakh applicants to work with top companies for a duration of twelve months. This scheme operates independently and is separate from existing programs related to skill development, apprenticeship, internships, and student training programs across states and union territories of India.

Each intern will receive a monthly stipend of 5,000 rupees, with Rs. 500 contributed by the company and the rest by the Government of India. Interns will also receive a one-time grant of 6,000 rupees to cover initial expenses. Another key feature of this internship is the insurance coverage, provided under the Government of India schemes Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. The government will cover the premium amounts, and companies will offer additional accidental coverage.

Eligibility Criteria

Like every internship and scheme, PMIS has specific eligibility criteria. The young Indian population, aged 21-24, who are not engaged in any full-time job or education program, are eligible to apply. Candidates enrolled in online or distance learning programs are also eligible. Candidates who have passed high school, higher secondary, or hold certificates from an ITI, Polytechnic Institute, or degrees such as BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BCA, BBA, B.Pharm, etc., are eligible.

There are also certain ineligibility criteria. Graduates from IITs, IIMs, IISERs, NIDs, and IIITs, or those with qualifications such as CA, CMA, CS, MBBS, MBA, or any master’s or higher degree are ineligible. Candidates from families with an annual income exceeding 8 lakhs are also not eligible. Furthermore, those already participating in any skill development, apprenticeship, internship, or student training program under Central or State Governments are ineligible.

How to Apply?

Candidates can apply for the internship through the portal pminternship.mca.gov.in. They must fill in the registration details and click submit. Based on the information provided, a resume will be generated by the portal. A candidate can apply for up to 5 internship opportunities based on their preferences—location, sector, functional role, and qualifications. There are no application fees for this scheme.
