PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to the US: Key Agendas and Strategic Objectives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scheduled his visit to the United States of America from September 21 to September 23, 2024. There are three main objectives behind his visit, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Three Major Agendas:
  1. To take part in the fourth Quad meeting.
  2. To address the Indian diaspora in New York and meet with influential CEOs of US-based companies.
  3. To discuss the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the UN General Assembly.
Quad Summit

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) is a strategic partnership between the United States, Japan, India, and Australia. Originally proposed by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007, the Quad has grown into a key diplomatic and military alliance aimed at promoting a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad summit is considered the major highlight of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US, as the group holds significant importance. It plays an important role in regional security and cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly given increased security threats, especially from China.

The Quad aims to tackle these security issues by remaining united and fosters future developments in a mutually beneficial way. The Quad bloc initiates many ventures that aim to improve infrastructure, maritime security, public-private partnerships, climate, health, critical and emerging technologies, and space.

On the first day of his visit, September 21, 2024, PM Narendra Modi will attend the fourth Quad meeting hosted by US President Joe Biden. The summit will be held in Wilmington, Delaware. The Ministry of External Affairs also mentioned that next year, the Quad meeting will be hosted by India in September 2025, following the US’s request to host the meeting this year.

The Quad leaders from India, Japan, Australia, and the US will meet to discuss the progress made over the past year and set the agenda for the coming year. They will also address the problems, developments, and aspirations of the Indo-Pacific region.

The Prime Minister will meet the Indian community on the second day of his visit to the US. He will address the Indian diaspora in New York on September 22. He is expected to meet several influential and established heads of US companies to discuss bilateral collaborations in key areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, and biotechnology, aiming to deepen economic and technological cooperation between India and the US.

Apart from meeting the Indian community and CEOs, the Prime Minister is also said to have sideline interactions with thought leaders and other significant stakeholders active in both India and the US. These interactions are expected to enhance current political relationships and benefit the Indian economy and business sector.

Summit of the Future

On September 23, the Prime Minister will address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The theme of the summit is ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.’

The summit has two primary objectives:

  • Accelerate efforts to meet existing international commitments.
  • Take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.

Nearly all leading countries will participate in the summit and adopt a ‘Pact for the Future.’ This collaborative initiative aims to safeguard the world’s future and foster a sense of unity in the face of emerging security threats and dilemmas.

Through this summit, global leaders aim to strengthen international relations and trust. They also view it as an opportunity to demonstrate that international cooperation can lead to significant changes, achieve common goals, and address global challenges and threats.
