Kate Winslet, 48, revealed in a Harper’s Bazaar interview that she was encouraged to cover up her belly rolls during a swimsuit scene in her 2023 film, “Lee“. Winslet portrayed the real-life American war journalist Lee Miller, and the scene involved her sitting on a bench in a bikini.
“There’s a bit where Lee’s sitting on a bench in a bikini… And one of the crew came up between takes and said: ‘You might want to sit up straighter,’” Winslet recounted. Her response was firm: “‘So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life!’”
Intentional Authenticity
Winslet purposefully stopped working out before filming to ensure her body looked softer and more authentic for the role. She embraced her natural appearance, stating, “I take pride in it because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”
Championing Body Positivity
A longtime advocate for body positivity, Winslet has openly discussed the bullying she faced due to her weight, both in her youth and throughout her career. She recalled being called “Blubber” by classmates and facing harsh scrutiny from the media after her rise to fame with “Titanic.”
Fighting Unrealistic Standards
Winslet has consistently pushed back against unrealistic beauty standards. In 2003, she called out British GQ for editing her cover photo to make her appear slimmer. More recently, she instructed her “Mare of Easttown” director to leave her body unedited in a revealing scene.
