HM Amit Shah cancelled his election campaign in Karnataka on May 5th to oversee the situation in Manipur, where there have been instances of violence between the Kukis and Meitis, two ethnic groups.
He held a video conference with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to assess the measures taken by the State government to maintain law and order.
The Union home secretary, state DGP, and chief secretary also attended the meeting. It is said that the violence has stopped in the majority of districts, except for a few regions that are under the jurisdiction of 4-5 police stations.
On Friday (May 5), a substantial group from the central paramilitary force was sent to Manipur, consisting of 1000 individuals and 10 extra companies. These forces, with anti-riot vehicles, conducted flag marches in areas of Manipur that have been affected by violence.

Former CRPF chief Kuldiep Singh has been appointed as an advisor to the Manipur government led by Biren Singh. Additionally, Ashutosh Sinha, the additional DGP for Intelligence, has been designated as the overall operational commander and will work under Kuldiep Singh.
The central government is reportedly collaborating with the state government to restore normalcy in Manipur, where the Home Department had previously issued orders to shoot-at-sight in extreme cases in violence-hit areas.
According to a report by Urukul Times, the number of deaths in the state has risen to 31, based on the number of bodies in the morgues of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal.
The violence broke out on May 3 in several parts of Manipur during protests by tribal groups against the Meitei community’s demand for ST status, resulting in significant arson and violent clashes.
