Accused Posed as Police Officer to Carry Out Crime
Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: Sanjoy Roy, accused of the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was not a regular police officer but a civic volunteer. Despite this, Roy managed to deceive many by posing as a Kolkata Police officer. He roamed the hospital campus wearing a t-shirt with “KP” (Kolkata Police) printed on it and used a motorcycle with a KP tag, giving the impression that he was an official police officer.
Involvement in Hospital Admission Racket
Roy had been associated with Kolkata Police since 2019 as a civic volunteer, initially working with the disaster management group before transferring to the police welfare cell. He later moved to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College, where he gained access to various departments. Reports suggest that Roy was involved in a racket that charged patients’ relatives for hospital admissions or securing beds at nearby nursing homes when government hospital beds were unavailable. His fraudulent activities allowed him to stay at police barracks and continue posing as a legitimate cop.

Crime and Arrest
Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: On the day of the crime, CCTV footage captured Roy entering the emergency building of the hospital around 4 am. The doctor’s body was discovered in the same building hours later. A crucial piece of evidence was a Bluetooth headset found near the victim’s body. The footage showed the headset around Roy’s neck when he entered the building, and it paired with his phone, implicating him further in the crime.
After committing the crime, Roy attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes. However, the police discovered bloodstains on his shoes. When questioned, Roy confessed to the crime without showing any remorse and casually stated, “Hang me if you want.” His mobile phone was also found to contain pornographic material.
Nationwide Protests and Resignation of College Principal
Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: The brutal rape and murder of the doctor have sparked nationwide outrage and protests.
