Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced several significant new laws aimed at addressing various social and demographic concerns in the state. During a state Executive meeting of the BJP in Guwahati, CM Sarma revealed his government’s plans to introduce stringent legal measures and policies.
- Lifetime Imprisonment for Love Jihad: CM Sarma declared that the state will soon enact a law imposing lifetime imprisonment for those convicted of Love Jihad. This announcement received strong support from the audience at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
- Domicile Policy for Government Jobs: To combat concerns related to demographic changes in Assam, a new domicile policy will be implemented. This policy will reserve government jobs for individuals born in Assam, aiming to address the state’s evolving demographic challenges.
- Restrictions on Land Sales: A series of new laws will impose restrictions on land sales:
- Inter-Religious Land Sales: Chief Ministerial permission will be required for land transactions between individuals of different religions.
- Specific Area Restrictions: In the undivided Goalpara district, land sales to people from certain communities will be prohibited to protect the land owned by indigenous residents.
- Land Rights for Tribal Communities: The new laws will also protect land rights for tribal communities, establishing micro tribal belts and blocks in areas with significant tribal populations.
Additionally, CM Sarma announced measures to safeguard land associated with religious sites in Barpeta, Bordowa, and Majuli. These sites will be protected by restricting land purchases to local residents, and the government remains open to expanding these restrictions based on public feedback.

“We can’t push anyone to Bangladesh, but we will take every step within our power to protect our future,” said CM Sarma, underscoring the government’s commitment to these new laws.
